"Something To Someone" came from Dermot Kennedy reflecting on the dark and lonely pandemic era. Though most of our circle of friends, family and romantic partners were far away, we could take encouragement in knowing they still love us. "I think it's just a nice thought right for anybody, anywhere in the whole world," Kennedy told Clara Amfo on her BBC Radio 1's Future Sounds show. "Someone is that one person for you that he's thinking about, you know, no matter how lonely or distant you might feel."
Kennedy defined "To be something to someone" as "to love and be loved in return." He added: "What a comforting thought it is to know that no matter what you endure, no matter how lonely the world may seem, you're still on somebody's mind. It is the only thing. I want this song to be a reminder to whoever hears it that they are loved."
Kennedy wrote the song with Sam Romans, Scott Harris, and Jonah Seth Rawitz. Harris and Romans co-wrote the Irish singer's previous single, "Better Days," and Harris also helped Kennedy pen "Outnumbered," "Power Over Me," and "Giants."
