Kingston told Blues and Soul magazine about this song, which reflects on the four pre-teen years he spent living in Jamaica: "Both my mom and dad were born in Jamaica. So growing up I stayed in Kingston for a little bit, as well as later going to Ocho Rios High. And, while Ocho Rios has a lotta resorts, a lotta beaches and a lotta hotels, Kingston is more about the streets, the ghetto and the poverty - where you don't really wanna go outdoors after a certain time. So in 'Take You There' I'm basically telling a girl, 'Let me take you to where I'm from - to Jamaica, to the paradise AND to the slums!.' Because, while many people just think of the tropical beaches, there is definitely another, rugged side to the island too!"
Kingston wrote this song with his producer, J.R. Rotem, along with Evan "Kidd" Bogart and the songwriting production team R. City (the brothers Theron and Timothy Thomas). Bogart, who is white, found himself writing lyrics describing the rough sections of Jamaica even though he had never been to the island. "I'm sitting here like, What am I going to write about Jamaica? I've never been to Jamaica," he said on Behind The Wall. "I write these verses like: Baby girl I know it's rough but come with me We can take a trip to the hood It's no problem girl it's my city I can take you there And Sean was like, 'I love it! This is amazing!' I was just trying to paint the picture of what it would have been like living in this beautiful paradise that also has this dark underbelly. I was trying to encapsulate that in those verses. Like, come to my land with me, let's be in love, but also it's dangerous."
Kingston had a #1 hit with his first single, "Beautiful Girls," which he followed up with "Me Love," which went to #14. "Take You There" was his third single, and it climbed to #7. All three songs were from his self-titled debut album, released in 2007 when he was 17. Kingston remained popular over the next few years but fell off around 2013 when his hits dried up. He was convicted of wire fraud in 2025.
