This song about the morning after originally featured on nwa.hollywooddreams.coffee, an EP previewing three tracks on Miguel's Wildheart album. "More than anything, I'm just a sexual being, and I think sex is a very spiritual thing," Miguel told MTV News about the inspiration for the song. "So sex and spirituality are kind synonymous for me. I think it's something that should be shared with honest connectivity, even when its lustful. So 'Coffee' is an ode to lust in it's most beautiful sense."
A re-worked, more explicit version of the track, re-titled as "Coffee (F---ing)" was released on May 4, 2015 as the lead single from Wildheart. This version featured an extra shot of caffeine in the form of a feature by rapper Wale. Miguel and Wale previously collaborated on the Washington D.C. MC's 2011 hit single "Lotus Flower Bomb."
The version that appears on Wildheart sees Wale's verse removed, replaced by extra vocals from Miguel.
