"Finally Alone" finds Mac DeMarco fantasizing about fleeing the city for somewhere mundane where he can tend "all the pretty cattle" in solitude. "I've been on tour a lot," Demarco explained to Q Magazine. "There had been a couple of periods when I was like, 'I'm just gonna buy a house in a strange country and move away and nobody's ever gonna see me again.' So, I think it's just me kind of mulling over those thoughts."
The song is about seeking solitude even when you're not sure that's what you want. The track's breezy sound belies its lyrical content about isolation. DeMarco told NME: "I've always loved that juxtaposition of cute-sounding music and then lyrics about isolation. It's inner turmoil. I think the theme of this record goes through that a lot. It's about not knowing what you want and vibing on it."
