This is one of two songs on Feels Like Home written by Jermaine Dupri. It was the first time the songwriter, who is best known for his songs for acts such as Mariah Carey, Usher and Janet Jackson, had ventured outside the world of hip-hop and R&B and written for a rock act. Billboard magazine asked Dupri if he'd always been a rock fan. He replied: "'I've been a big rock fan all my life and Nirvana is probably one of my favorite groups. But I also pay attention to lyrics. If you listen to "Let It All Hang Out' I have Rivers quote a Jay-Z line ["I feel like Jay-Z/This can't be life"]. I thought about it for a minute and I wondered how people were going to take it. But, I kept referencing the 'Buddy Holly record and I knew we spoke the same language. It was a perfect marriage."
Cuomo: "'Let It All Hang Out,' that's actually a riff I had laying around for a long time, on the electric guitar. We just needed another song, so I pulled it out. Jermaine Dupri came in and started doing a vocal line over the top of it. It's really fun."
