Formerly known as Marina and the Diamonds, this is the first release by Marina Diamandis under her shortened moniker of Marina. She explained that "It took me well over a year to figure out that a lot of my identity was tied up in who I was as an artist... and there wasn't much left of who I was." The song was her first single as a solo lead artist since "Blue" in 2015.
The melodramatic pop number finds Diamandis shedding her past and finding salvation in her new identity. In this handmade heaven, I come alive Bluebirds forever, color the sky In this handmade heaven, we forget the time 'Cause birds of a feather fly together According to a press release the song finds Marina imagining "a world as simple as the beautiful creatures and nature that surround her."
Written solely by Marina, the song was produced by Lorde and Sam Smith collaborator Joel Little. The New Zealand producer creates a hymnal effect throughout the verses, by layering Marina's vocals so that they serve as her own personal choir.
