In 2005, INXS found their new lead singer when JD Fortune won their reality competition, Rock Star: INXS. Fortune had the impossible task of replacing Michael Hutchence, their original frontman/lyricist who died in 1997. "Afterglow" is about struggling to come out of Hutchence's shadow with love and respect for all the work he did to make INXS a global phenomenon.
INXS tried to fill Hutchence's songwriting void by bringing in outside writers for the Switch album, their first after his passing. On "Afterglow," the band's keyboard/guitar player Andrew Farriss teamed with Desmond Child, whose credits include "You Give Love a Bad Name" by Bon Jovi and "Crazy" by Aerosmith.
This was the second single from the Switch album, following "Pretty Vegas." Both songs got some attention in the band's native Australia, but had little impact elsewhere. The band toured for two years but then broke apart, reforming for various projects over the years. They played their last concert in 2012; by this time, Fortune had been replaced by Ciaran Gribbin.
