"To Be Human" is the most political song on Marina's Love + Fear album. It finds the singer analyzing humanity's flaws and the way cultural differences can cause division. She talks about how we should be united by the fact that we all go through human experience. Speaking about the song with Billboard, Marina said she feels it's important we are all engaged in a wider discussion about women's issues. "It's not just about spreading your own word, but about planting seeds in people's minds," she explained. "We all need to be challenged in different ways, and if no one presents different ideas to us, how are we meant to grow and learn?"
