Colin Meloy croons from the point of view of a female addressing a man during this delicately sung track. "It's a cheeky song poking fun at gender stuff," he told The Sun. "I'll Be Your Girl is a kind of a rock 'n' roll trope like I'm Your Man." "We're all discovering more about what gender means, the fluidity of gender, how much gender is just a construct," Meloy added. "People are really dividing in to camps. Some are open-minded while others are lashing themselves to the buoy of their gender, this idea of men who feel their masculinity is endangered."
The song is the title track of The Decemberists' eighth album. Meloy explained: "The record goes to so many dark places that I think the title needs to be something generous, more embracing."
