In an interview with Coup de Main, Tyler Joseph said that during this song he's addressing a younger version of himself and what he wishes he'd heard. In particular he's talking about maintaining hope and pushing through difficult times, and the difference between internal and external pressure. Nice to know my kind will be on my side I don't believe the hype And you know you're a terrible sight But you'll be just fine Just don't believe the hype Tyler explained: "A lot of the things that I write about come from wrestling with an internal pressure, but there are those external pressures of the world around us that can be addressed as well, and that song particularly addresses those in a way that - Just an encouragement to keep going, to let things roll off your back that deserve to be put aside."
"The Hype" was played live for the first time at Twenty One Pilots' show in Monterrey, Mexico on May 1, 2019.
Directed by the duo's frequent collaborators Andrew Donoho and Reel Bear Media, the video starts with Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun performing to a few friends in a wood-paneled living room. Transitioning to a more crowded basement gig, they eventually find themselves on the roof of the house playing to a jam-packed street.
