The Unapologetically album tells the story of Kelsea Ballerini's recovery from a difficult breakup and self-discovery before finding love with fellow country singer Morgan Evans. This song finds the singer listing the reasons why she's better off without her ex as she lists his various demands when they were together. The result was she lost her independence. I retired my red lipstick 'cause you said you didn't like it I didn't wear my high heeled shoes, 'cause I couldn't be taller than you "In a lot of young relationships, you fall in love for the first time and you give every part of yourself to make it work," Ballerini explained to the BBC. "But sometimes, when it's not treated right, that's how you lose yourself. I think it's really a beautiful moment when you get to the other side, and you're looking in the mirror and you're like, 'Huh, I thought I was going to miss him but - actually - I miss me!'"

Kelsea Ballerini wrote the song with: Brett McLaughlin, known as Leland to his music peers, whose other credits include with Daya's "Hide Away," Troye Sivan's "Youth" and Selena Gomez's "Fetish." Former Evanescence member David Hodges, who has also written hit songs for Kelly Clarkson ("Because Of You"), Daughtry ("What About Now") and Christina Perri ("A Thousand Years").

Pop Crush asked Ballerini how she got get linked up with Leland. She replied: "I followed him on Twitter, because I'm obsessed with Troye Sivan, and he wrote a lot of that record [Blue Neighbourhood]. I was out in LA and had a morning off. I messaged him, 'Hey, my name's Kelsea. I'm a country singer, and I love you and what you've written with Troye and Daya. I was wondering if you could write today?' And he could. It was this perfect storm."
