The mountain lion sound that Built To Spill frontman Doug Martsch creates for this track was done by his guitar through a wah pedal. He told American Songwriter magazine: "It was one of those things that I went back and forth on because it seemed so silly. But y'know, yeah, in the end it was just, 'oh that's rad, who cares if it's silly.'"
The lyrics to this song were written by Doug Martsch's wife, Karena Youtz. Martsch told Under The Radar magazine: "She's written lyrics for a lot of our songs over the years. I think that might be all she did for this record. The basic ideas for the song [were] 'being a lion, being a human, too, living in a cage.' Her lyrics."
