Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Spotlight Kid. By Songfacts®.

According to Joe Lynn Turner in the Roy Davies biography Rainbow Rising: The Story Of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, this Blackmore/Glover composition is lyrically inspired by Mr. Blackmore himself. That may indeed be true, but the sentiments, emotions and scenarios therein have probably been shared by a million performers, not only musicians but actors and all manner of entertainers.

The uptempo "Spotlight Kid" is an obvious show opener and has been used as such. By the time it was written, Ritchie Blackmore had been performing for over a quarter of a century including with three lineups of Deep Purple. Lyricist Roger Glover, who was born the same year as Blackmore, had also lived the rock star lifestyle. "Spotlight Kid" is the second track on the 1981 Difficult To Cure album wherein it runs to 4 minutes 54 seconds.

Although it is the second track on the 1981 Difficult To Cure album, "Spotlight Kid" is is usually prefixed with a few bars from "Over The Rainbow" when performed live. Running to 4 minutes 54 seconds, this uptempo, unashamedly commercial song was co-written by Messrs Blackmore and Glover, presumably the latter providing the lyrics and perhaps collaborating on the music.
