Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Falling Away from Me. By Songfacts®.

Korn lead singer Jonathan Davis is very forthright about his battles with depression and the abuse he endured as a kid. He often loads these thoughts into his lyrics as a catharsis, and to let listeners who might be going through something similar know they're not alone. "Falling Away From Me" is one of these songs. He explained: "The song is about domestic abuse and that there are ways to get help. Whether it's telling someone or calling a help line, there are ways to get out of those situations. No one has to be treated like that." The song doesn't offer solutions, but it does offer empathy. For many Korn fans, knowing that Davis - a successful rock star - often felt beaten down by life signaled that it was OK to feel this way. There was no shame in talking about it or asking for help.

"Falling Away From Me" was the first single from Korn's fourth album, Issues. This was the peak of their popularity. After gradually building a following in the mid-'90s by constantly touring, they emerged as one of the biggest bands in America in 1998 with their album Follow The Leader, which went to #1 and sold over 5 million copies. Korn wasn't that widely popular, but their fanbase was fervent, and with some help from the internet they connected and spread the word. So while pop stars were selling albums that would go in the bin after a week, Korn's music carried a lot of weight. When Issues was released, all those Korn fans bought it right away, so it debuted at #1. It went on to sell over 3 million copies just in America. The band didn't go back to the studio until 2001, so their next album, Untouchables, didn't appear until 2002. That was a long time to wait, and many fans had moved on by that point.

Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst directed the video. The concept is a teen coping with domestic abuse. According to Pop-Up video, MTV had a problem with the beating part. They wouldn't allow Korn to show any direct contact. According to Korn's management, the electricity part of the video "represents the power inside us to change our situation and take control." Korn saw it differently, "It was just a metal cool thing." At the end of the clip when the room starts lighting up, if you look close enough you can see Fred Durst's face for a split second.
