Brandon Flowers' wife Tana Mundkowsky suffers from PTSD because of traumas experienced in her childhood. An overriding theme running through Imploding The Mirage is about their marriage and whether two can become one to make it through the storm. This stomping track finds Flowers singing of how successful couples are more than the sum of their parts.
In a truly unified marriage, the two walk shoulder-to-shoulder rather than the husband striding ahead of his wife. Don't push, control is overrated I know that if we stick together My God, it's like the weight has been lifted Flowers explained to American Songwriter that the idea for the lyric "came from the shifting nature of what I think a man is and what the role of a man should be. We can change for the better. We can become more unified. We can walk side-by-side and appreciate the idea that we're all doing this together."
The song connects to the album's vivid artwork by African American artist Thomas Blackshear. His Dance of the Wind and Storm painting shows two clouds taking the shape of a man and woman drifting together. "They just look like gods," Flowers told NME. "I just started to see a path open up in what these two people could represent for me. We blew up terrible lo-res versions of them and stuck them up in the studio. I would go to them when I needed help with lyrics and when we needed help with sonics, or [to decide] which songs were making the record. It became a member of the band. There are direct lines that will just take you to the painting."
