On this skittering dance-oriented track, Glass Animals frontman Dave Bayley sings about dysfunctional relationships. Mmm, I shut my eyes You call but I just cut the line I know your style I know that you want one more night Bayley knows such toxic associations are bad for him, but he can't stop himself engaging in them. And I'm backsliding Into this just one more time
The "déjà vu" in the track's title alludes to the self-destructive nature of these relationships. Bayley keeps letting the person back into his life, but every time he ends up getting treated badly. "We let that person back into our lives over and over again, even though it always ends the same, or because it's easier to let it slide and never set boundaries," Bayley explained to Apple Music. "Maybe you think you deserve that unhappiness, or maybe you find some strange comfort in the chaos. Maybe you even get off on that chaos and get some weird kick out of it."
BBC Radio 1's Annie Mac premiered the song on her Future Sounds show, Dave Bayley explained to her, the relationship he is singing of is not necessarily romantic – it could be with a family member or a friend. "You keep letting that person back into your life," he added. "Either because you think it's going to change, or because something deeper, darker – you're addicted to the chaos of that relationship. That's what this is about – being addicted to the mess."
