The title was taken from a 1950 Humphrey Bogart movie directed by Nicholas Ray (the director of Rebel Without A Cause). In it, Bogart plays a screenwriter accused of murder. This inspires and then sours a romance with Gloria Graham, leading to dialog such as "I was born the day I met you" and "Yesterday that might have mattered, not it doesn't mean a thing," which was cut and pasted into the lyrics for the song.
