This song deals with life and the directions it can take. In some cases, quite literally: friction, lines, bumps, signs turning right - ergo, "highway" song. While it may seem that this song is about driving and getting into an accident, much more meaning can be derived from it - don't make the wrong choices because you can only choose once.
This appears on Steal This Album!, which was recorded during the Toxicity sessions but leaked on the internet (a very 2002 problem), forcing the band to release it early. They packaged the album to look like a home-burn CD, with no packaging. Predictably, it sold poorly, but SOAD just wanted to get the songs out there with the mixes they intended. Their next albums, Mezmerize and Hypnotize, didn't appear until 2005; both went to #1 in America.
