The tune is played at the end of train rides, the end of school days and when malls are about to close, while TV stations also play the song before ending their evening broadcasts at night. In addition, many Chinese businesses begin piping the music over their loudspeakers shortly before shutting down for the day.
Kenny G has no idea why his smooth instrumental has become such a staple in Chinese culture, but he does know where to put it in his set list when he performs in the country. "I save it for last because I don't want everyone going home early," he told The New York Times.
