Fire Coming out of the Monkey's Head

The Gorillaz universe contains strange worlds in faraway lands - they're portrayed by cartoon characters, after all. This song is about a small town of "Happyfolk" invaded by an army of "Strangefolk" who mine a nearby mountain for riches, awakening a deity that resides in the mountain. Due to the excavation, the mountain erupts as a volcano, possibly destroying the town. It's very Dr. Seuss, but a lot darker. Damon Albarn, the musical leader of Gorillaz, often uses their songs to make sly commentary, which in this case is about the plunder of natural resources. "That came from a very naive idea, which is: what is going to happen when they've taken all of the oil out of the earth?," he told Notion magazine. "Aren't there going to be these vast holes? Surely those holes shouldn't be empty. Surely there is a reason why they had all of this in. It's like bad plastic surgery, eventually it collapses."

Most of the song is a spoken-word narration read by the actor Dennis Hopper.

"Fire Coming Out Of The Monkey's Head" is part of the second Gorillaz album, Demon Days, released in 2005, four years after their self-titled debut. The song is considered the first in a trilogy on the album along with "Don't Get Lost In Heaven" and "Demon Days."
