This song was inspired by the death of John Woloschuk's beloved pet Bassett Hound. John, who was in Los Angeles at the time recording the album Endangered Species, was inspired to write the song after seeing a greeting card with the image of a Bassett Hound on it, and the caption, "I never had a better friend than you." That is also the opening line of the song.
