Stadium Arcadium, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' ninth studio album, was praised for encompassing the different styles the band have explored throughout their career, which started as a funk-styled, rap-rock outfit in 1983. The upbeat rocker "So Much I," which appears on the album's second disc, Mars, is a necessary component in the band's music. "We need that in part of the repertoire," Kiedis said. "We need that motion, that locomotion."

Although he wasn't part of the writing process for the track, guitarist John Frusciante thinks of this as a tribute to his friend Guy Picciotto of the band Fugazi because the tune immediately reminded him of Guy's guitar playing.
