Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Thought I Knew. By Songfacts®.

On this breakup song, the band switched up their usual roles: Guitarist Brian Bell sang lead, drummer Pat Wilson played lead guitar, and lead singer Rivers Cuomo played synth drums.

Brian Bell also wrote the track, which he intended as a solemn lament of a broken relationship for his side project, The Relationship, before it got a pop makeover for the Red Album. While he always filled the role of lead songwriter, Cuomo wanted the album to be more of a collaborative effort. Said Cuomo: "It wasn't as if I just let go and gave them the space. We've grown as a team. It's more complicated than me being a control freak before and now I'm not. Part of it was them feeling more confident to conquer their own fears in fighting and demanding their songs be on the album." Bell added: "It was something that was inevitable for the continued health and longevity of the band. This time, other people's songs had gotten to the point where they were at least of the same caliber as Rivers'. One of my goals on this album was to sing and record one of my own songs with Weezer."
