Niall Horan first started dating Hailee Steinfeld in late 2017, but called time on their relationship after a year. He turned to longtime collaborators Jamie Scott, Daniel Bryer and Mike Needle to help him channel the heartbreak of his split. "I'd just gone through a breakup and it was all very real," he told The Sun. "It was very easy to sit down at the piano and speak and see what happens." What happened was this haunting piano ballad in which Horan sings about a love gone wrong.

Horan tapped Greg Kurstin, the man behind hits like Adele's "Hello" and Sia's "Cheap Thrills," to arrange and produce the strings. Said Horan: "When I gave him this song and asked him to produce it I said, 'Adele the s--t out of this.'"

In the Cameron Busby-directed video, Horan plays the piano as a woman in red dances alone in a spotlight. Is it coincidence that she bears a strong resemblance to Hailee Steinfeld?
