There's often a lovesick element to Dan Auerbach's lyrics but he denied to Q magazine that this was done on purpose for El Camino. He said: "This record is way less about lyrics and way more about melody. But, yeah, the songs are either about love or just abstract. I wasn't thinking about an overall theme. It almost felt like how they used to make records at Stax or Motown where they recorded all those songs incredibly fast and they didn't get too precious about anything."
