"Told You So" is a guitar-powered funk song with a double meaning of a controlling lover and a despotic regime. I know you sense a pleasure in my eye As long as you know, baby Every pleasure you taste has its price, babe The song fits in with the gritty topics that Miguel is portraying with his War & Leisure album - the threat of nuclear war and Donald Trump. "You see us on the brink of nuclear war over Twitter," he said. "Or the rise of the far right in Germany and France. So my whole mindset for the album is: what are we supposed to do caught in the middle of this? We're at the brink of complete war and complete pleasure, at all times, every day."
Directed by Karim Huu Do in 2016, the video follows Miguel dancing in the desert and on top of an old car, intercut with a series of political scenes and premonitions of world destruction.
Miguel re-recorded the song in 2019 with Mexican Mariachi girl band Flor de Toloache as the title track of Te Lo Dije, the singer's first ever Spanish-language project. The EP is a compilation of five Spanish /Spanglish-language versions of his songs from War & Leisure album. "Te Lo Dije" (Spanish for "told you so") has a double meaning: it is not only the name of one of this song, but it is also a proper "told you so" to Miguel's fans because he has been saying he would release a Spanish-language project.
