This is the opening track of All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us. The album title is taken from one of this song's lyrics. Frontman Sam Carter explained to HMV.com: "It's a statement about the dark and weird place the world is these days, we seem to have abandoned the simpler ways of living life and moved to a place where we're just trying to f--k each other over. Whether our gods have abandoned us or we've abandoned them, it's a statement with real impact. When you see that title you know this is going to be a heavy record. Heavy in title, heavy in songs."
Nihilism is a negative existentialist philosophy that believes in ultimate nothingness – life has no intrinsic meaning or value. The term was coined by the German theologian Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi (1743–1818). Its widespread usage began with the 1862 novel Fathers and Sons by the Russian author Ivan Turgenev and was subsequently adopted in Russia by the Nihilist anarchist movement who protested against conventional and established values. According to the Online Etymological Dictionary, they called themselves nihilists because, "nothing that then existed found favor in their eyes."
