Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Refrain. By Songfacts®.

Originally titled "Vingt Ans," i.e. "Twenty Years," "Refrain" was the song that won the inaugural Eurovision Song Contest, which was held at Lugano, Switzerland in 1956. (The word refrain means the same in English as in French and German). Written by Émile Gardaz and composed by Géo Voumard, it was performed by Swiss singer Lys Assia. Actually, it is a little more complicated than that. The song was released on the Decca label with the full title "Refrain (Du Gold'ner Traum Meiner Jugendzeit)," the German subtitle rendering as "You Golden Dream Of My Youth."

Two additional credits appear in the title on the actual label: Pary and Robbiani, the latter being the composer Mario Robbiani.

The Eurovision version was sung in French; Assia also recorded it in German, and in English as "Last Night." The song finds her looking back on a lost love.
