This song is about the end of a relationship. Dua Lipa explained to The Sun: "I was in the middle of mourning a relationship that hadn't really ended when I wrote that song. It was wishful thinking at that point that maybe one day we could be friends. It was what I was going through at the time." She added: "Heartbreak is very sad but it is also very inspiring and great for being creative. You always have a lot of stories when you are heartbroken."
Dua Lipa admitted to GQ that she tested this doomed relationship song on her boyfriend at the time. "When I would write songs, I would play them to him," she recalled. "The thing was, when I played him songs and I didn't want to let him know they were about him, I would say, 'Well, this song is about this person who is dealing with this crazy thing, so I just decided to base it on their stories and isn't it interesting?'" Once they'd split, the guy discovered the song's real meaning but Dua Lipa insisted to the magazine that "he's totally OK with it."
