Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Marz. By Songfacts®.

John Grant is a Denver-born solo artist and former lead vocalist of Denver cult band The Czars. This is a track from his critically-acclaimed solo debut album, Queen of Denmark, on which he is backed by American folk rock band Midlake.

The verses of the song are taken from the menu of a sweetshop that Grant used to visit in his childhood days in the small town of Buchanan, Michigan.

The blurred faces on the album cover represent Grant at different ages. "The man with the crown on is the man who has been corrupted by the world," he explained to Q magazine. "The man who's looking away is the kid from Marz, whose eyes haven't been darkened by the knowledge that life is tricky and difficult. That's something I think you should be taught to make peace with early on. I think I was shielded from that for a long time."
