This is based on the ideas and writings of futurist author Ray Kurzweil, who writes about AI (artificial intelligence) and its place in human society. Kurzweil suggests that the AI machines will "embody human qualities, claim to be human, and we will believe them." Kurzweil's voice opens the beginning of the song.
Kurzweil's book Spiritual Machines is where the band got the name for this album. The book was suggested by then guitarist Mike Turner.
