Trivia

Interesting facts about Dopamine. By Songfacts.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that acts as a chemical messenger in the brain, playing a central role in regulating the "reward system" by influencing motivation and pleasure. This song captures the fizzing, slightly alarming rush of falling in love while simultaneously standing outside your own body, clipboard in hand, noting that this is all just neurons firing and hormones doing what they've always done. "Everyone has a phone where they see their heart rate, and we're learning how to decode our emotions through the hormones and chemical substances in our bodies," Robyn explained. "It's almost like we don't even accept that we're human anymore, like we're trying to shoot ourselves out of it and explain every single thing, which I think is great, but that's also why the world is s--t, this idea that you can figure out and win life or something." The trick, she continued, isn't choosing between science and spirituality, but letting them coexist, accepting that an emotion can be overwhelming and sacred while also being, on some level, a biological process. It's the grown-up cousin to the ecstatic surrender of "With Every Heartbeat," only this time she knows exactly what the heartbeat is doing.

Released on November 12, 2025, "Dopamine" marked Robyn's return to solo music after a seven-year gap and served as the lead single from her ninth album, Sexistential. It also reunited her with longtime collaborator Klas Ahlund, the creative co-conspirator behind much of her catalog, including "Dancing On My Own." Taio Cruz, best known for his 2009 hit "Dynamite," receives a co-writing credit, though his specific contribution to the track has not been publicly detailed.

Robyn and Ahlund wrote "Dopamine" in 2015, nearly a decade before its release. At one point, she sent an early demo to Daft Punk, though the robots ultimately passed. For years, the track sat on the shelf because Robyn felt it didn't fit where she was headed. Before her 2018 album Honey, she said she didn't quite know how to make a traditional pop album, and "Dopamine" was unmistakably pop. Honey leans into nonlinear, club-style listening, more about atmosphere than choruses. When Robyn returned to the studio in 2020, "Dopamine" was one of the first songs she reopened. She and Ahlund wrote the verses in a conversational, speaking tone and during the recording process, and Ahlund encouraged her to channel Marvin Gaye for certain vocal sections.
