Rats

This epic riff-rocker has some intriguing and rather surreal lyrics, which fits the mold for Devendra Banhart. The title shows up only at the end of the song when he coughs and mutters, "rats." As for the meaning behind the song, Banhart hasn't said. One interpretation is that it's the prospective of a rodent. It could also be about a lopsided relationship that leaves the singer frustrated.

This appears on Banhart's 2009 album What Will We Be, but it had been around a while: he wrote it soon after releasing his 2005 album Cripple Crow.

Banhart is a native Spanish speaker born in Venezuela; he didn't learn English until his family moved to California when he was a teenager. What Will We Be was his first major-label album - it was released on Warner Bros.
