Bart Millard's dad was an abusive father until he found out that he had cancer, when the MercyMe vocalist was at high school. After the diagnosis he committed himself to Christ and one of a number of things he let go of were his abusive ways. Bart told Fox News: "He kind of fell in love with Christ and he went from the monster to the guy I wanted to be like when I grew up." This acoustic prayer for Bart's younger self is based on when he was abused as a kid. The song is directed at those who are struggling through life.
