Rolling Blackouts co-singer/guitarist Fran Kearney told Mojo magazine that "Time in Common" was inspired by an experience where he and his then-girlfriend were in Greece, "gazing up at the Acropolis with an ouzo, trying to compute the distance of time." He continued: "We're a bit of a goldfish nation, our memories don't stretch back very far. Then, right on cue, these Australians, maybe from an (18 to 35 travel brand) Contiki tour, sat down next to us with a big round of drinks, and started talking about the Essendon Aussie Rules Premiership team of 2000. So it's kind of a love song between two flashes in the pan, set against a gloomy backdrop of this fading relationship."
