The lead single from Redfoo's debut studio album Party Rock Mansion, this was a big hit Down Under, peaking at #3 in both Australia and New Zealand.

Redfoo was a judge/mentor on The X Factor Australia. He performed the song during its results show on September 1, 2014.

Redfoo explained the song's meaning to AT40: "New Thing is about the period of time when you break up with that somebody. I broke up with a girl, and I was back on the prowl. I was back on the hunt. And I was letting the ladies know that you could be my new thing. And thing is just a term of endearment. A lot of people say, 'Why do girls gotta be things, we are people, you know.' I mean it's like a boo. Girls aren't ghosts, either. So, it's just having fun. I didn't want, 'You could be my new girl,' it just sounded too [much like] trying to make it slang. And this is a song too."
