Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Waiting for an Alibi. By Songfacts®.

According to the Mark Putterford biography Phil Lynott: The Rocker, the 1979 uptempo commercial single "Waiting For An Alibi" was released February 23 on the Vertigo label, making #9 in the UK, and #6 in the band's native Ireland. Running to 3 minutes 29 seconds, backed by "With Love", and produced by Tony Visconti, it was written by bass player and vocalist Lynott. Although basically a fun track with the trademark Thin Lizzy duel lead guitar, there is little doubt on whom the song's Valentino character was based. While Lynott was not a gambler in the fiscal sense, he certainly enjoyed taking risks, and was just as certainly addicted. He lost his final bet on January 4, 1986 when he died in Salisbury Infirmary from complications due to his addiction to heroin.
