CalBoy is a rapper from Calumet City, Chicago. This short (it's under two minutes) track is his breakout single.
The song is an account of Calboy's tough upbringing in Chicago. It features production by JTK PRO BEATS, who has also worked with Lil Skies. "[JTK PRO BEATS] sent it to me and I was stuck," CalBoy told Genius about recording the track. "It was a cold beat, I just didn't know what to say on the beat because it was so cold. I just went in there and just freestyled, just whatever I thought about. It just came out."
Calboy told Billboard that he garnered inspiration for the lyrics from the 2017 satirical horror film Get Out. "['Envy Me'] is like being in the sunken place," he said. "My brother made me think of it that way. He told me, 'I see that you're in a dark place all the time. You can't sink.'"
