This was one of frontman Dave Gahan's three contributions as a songwriter to Sounds of the Universe. He penned it with his regular writing partners Christian Eigner, who is Depeche Mode's regular live drummer, and Andrew Phillpott.
Gahan told The Guardian March 21, 2009: This is one of the songs I wrote on the album, a very cynical song about wanting to fill a gaping hole but not knowing what to fill it with. About sometimes the idea of having a hole to feed all being a figment of my imagination when I'm actually fine."
