Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Vicar in a Tutu - 2011 Remaster. By Songfacts®.

This track about individuality and not being accepted in society is a track from The Queen Is Dead. Guitarist Johnny Marr recalled writing the music to accompany Morrissey's mischievous lyrics for this tune in an interview with NME: "I think I was self-conscious about doing something so playful," he said. "I had slides going on it and all sorts of stuff but the lyrics being so funny really helped out with the rest of the recording."

The lyric, "The roof of the Holy Name church," refers to an actual Catholic church building located in the Manchester University Quarter.

Though the lyrics poke fun at closed-minded religious values, Morrissey is a Catholic by birth and has said in interviews he has "never shed" a belief in God.
