Legend sampled Gabor Szabo's version of the Classics IV song "Stormy" for this track. Will.i.am from Black Eyed Peas helped produce the song and came up with the idea for the sample.

In this song, Legend tries to convince a girl to make love to him. The phrase "save room" is often used to let someone know a good dessert is waiting at the end of the meal.

"Save Room" was the first single from John Legend's second album, Once Again. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1999, he took a corporate job and worked on music as a side hustle. A few years later, he connected with Kanye West, who worked on Legend's 2004 debut album, Get Lifted, and released it on his GOOD Music label. "Ordinary People" was the biggest hit from that album, but it also includes songs like "Live It Up" and "So High" that established him as a sensitive loverman. "Save Room" is in that vein, and it really connected with his female fans. That year, he met Chrissy Teigen, whom he married in 2013.
