This is the closing track of House Of Gold And Bones: Part 1, the first half of a double concept album about a young man struggling with growing up, who finds himself waking up in a mysterious world. Frontman Corey Taylor told Artist Direct about the song. "I had those riffs for a while," he said. "I had never really sat down and fleshed it out. I had that chorus as well for a really long time, going way back before I had the story. I realized that it was the perfect not period at the end of the sentence, which would be Part 1, but it was definitely the best cliffhanger. It sets up the fact that, "Holy s--t, our hero's in trouble." It was a great way to end Part 1." "When I started working on the lyrics for it, I made sure that I came at it from a standpoint where the lyrics were married to the end of the story and not essentially before the end happened," Taylor added. "You read the story and, in my head, 'Last of the Real' starts. That's where it made sense to lead into 'Red City' for part two. I just love that tune. It's got a good greasy riff to it. It's got a good bounce. It's got a great set of 'F--k you' lyrics."
