Part of U2's electronia-infused album Pop, "Staring At The Sun" is about closing yourself off from reality to find a better place. Lead singer Bono said: "I think it nails a certain mood, where you actually don't want to know the truth because lies are more comforting."
According to Bono, his daughter Jordan inspired this song. "Jordan reminded me of my own early imaginative life, and I was envious of her surreality," he wrote in his memoir Surrender. "One summer day in France, I watched her explore every corner of the swimming pool as if it was her own consciousness. Her eyes, wide open under the water, the color of a jacaranda, utterly at home in this Atlantis. She was dreaming her self up, even then writing her own story, a writer being written."
Drummer Larry Mullen thought this could have been a huge hit if they had time to finish it properly. The album was rushed in order to meet deadlines.
