In a January 1983 interview with Melody Maker, Soft Cell's Marc Almond said of this song, "It's inspired by living in Leeds, looking at the guy who works all week on a conveyor belt and then goes out on a Friday night, gets totally pissed up and takes his frustrations out on... basically anybody else that's not like him. It's not saying that person is a particularly horrible person because, maybe, it's the circumstances he's in, maybe it's his only way out - to take it out on somebody else."
