The song title comes from Minnie Riperton, a 1970s R&B singer whose vocal range spanned five-octaves; Riperton's ability to enunciate in the high registers set her apart from most other singers in her era. Alexis told NME: "We were talking about her, because I'm always in awe of her stratospheric singing style. We ended up creating this character – Minnie Ripper – and those two words next to each other felt like something that should be on the record."
The song's hook, horn stabs and fall on the backbeat were all lifted from the Minnie Ripperton track "Les Fleurs."
