Luke Combs first performed this heartfelt song with fans in February and March 2020 during his What You See Is What You Get Tour. When the coronavirus pandemic put a stop to his concerts, Combs began sharing some of his unreleased songs on social media. He uploaded "Without You" on May 19, 2020.

Luke Combs released the song as the lead single from What You See Ain't Always What You Get on September 18, 2020. Highwoman and member of Jason Isbell's 400 Unit, Amanda Shires, plays the fiddle on the track.
