"Greed" is about a former friend of the band who lent them money to record the indie version of their first CD. He said he didn't want any money back, but the band paid him back anyway along with an additional $10,000 as thanks. This guy then tried to sue them, saying he owned 10 percent of Godsmack. The song is just telling him off for being ungrateful and putting them through a year of negotiating with lawyers.
This is the third and final single from Awake, the band's second studio album. The track peaked at #3 on the Mainstream Rock chart and #28 on the Modern Rock chart.
The music and lyrics were written by lead singer Sully Erna.
