Raleigh Ritchie explained the song's meaning to Billboard magazine: "'Cowards' is a song about the way that people navigate each other when they first meet, like when two people are attracted to each other physically and mentally but neither of them are really willing to admit it. There's this disconnect because you're spending your time trying to act cool, trying to save face."
