Anthony Kiedis: "The title is what this band tries very hard to do." Throughout this song, they give examples of how they do so, and relate it to women in clever ways.
In the album's commentary, Kiedis told his bandmate Flea about the lyrical inspiration behind the song. He said: "In this life we're given some gifts that just can't be taken away. Sometimes you have temporary gifts, they get taken away. You know, you meet somebody, they're a good person in your life, and it's like, 'Wow, what a gift.' Five years later, you don't even know 'em. But then there are gifts that you get that are yours for life: Who you are, the fact that you play music, that you'll always play music, your daughter - there are things that are just, that's yours for life. And as part of the gift of being a musician, you have the gift of making people feel better."
This appears on disc 2 (Mars) of the band's double album, Stadium Arcadium. What was supposed to be a little rock 'n roll record with a handful of songs blew up into a 38-track opus that was nearly released as a trilogy. Instead, the Peppers decided on a double album of 28 songs and used some of the remaining tracks as B-sides.
