Brandy Clark was very much left of center on this song about a bored pot-smoking housewife. It was the oldest song on 12 Stories record, and when she first wrote it, the topic was so taboo in Nashville that the publisher refused to demo it, as there was no way the tune would get cut.
Though Clark sells a lot of "Get High" merchandise, she told Radio.com to her the song "was never about pot." She explained: "It was just the vehicle to tell the story; it was more about escapism and how one woman escapes her life, the parts of her life that are too hard to deal with."
The stoned housewife Clark sings of here was based on a girl she went to high school with.
